A Denomination is a group of Christian churches united together in common confession of the Christian faith. This common confession in the Evangelical Lutheran Church is written in the Book of Concord, 1580. Those Christian churches that believe and confess the canonical books of the Old and New Testament to be the inspired Word of God and the only infallible rule of faith and practice, and the Book of Concord as a true exposition of Holy Scripture in agreement with the one scriptural faith, belong to the Evangelical Lutheran Church. “Evangelical” here means “loyal to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” Thus the Evangelical Lutheran Church is the Church of the Lutheran Reformation loyal to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Such Church ascribes to the Book of Concord its public declaration of the Christian faith.
